Brad and Carly wanted to build a comfortable, energy-efficient home in the Witchcliffe Ecovillage. Carly works in construction project management and studied interior design. She has a deep passion for Passive House principles and wanted a build with strict quality control and minimal site waste. The couple aimed to create a cosy, draft-free forever home. They wanted a simple layout that maximises space, connects seamlessly with the environment, and supports their lifestyle as they age.

The problem

Finding a builder who truly shared their passion for sustainability was a major hurdle. Many builders treat energy efficiency as an afterthought or offer generic quotes without understanding Passive House requirements. Budget management was another challenge. Passive House builds require exceptional precision, which can raise costs. Thermal bridges and poor sealing can easily compromise performance, so every detail matters to pass the blower door test.

To keep the project on budget and eliminate thermal bridges, Eco Homes simplified the floor plan and tweaked the roofline. Ventilated roof and walls: The ventilated roof cavity allows excess heat and moisture to escape, reducing overheating in summer, protecting roof materials, and improving the long term durability of the building envelope.
